I’m a mother, nutritional therapist and author who has been sharing recipes to help you get the glow back for the last 8 years...
As a new Mum balancing changing nappies and feeding times with running a business and staying connected with all of my fabulous Glow Girls, it goes with out saying that it is pretty easy to feel overwhelmed by the work load. So whilst I would love to be able to chat with each and every one of you 24/7 on social media – it simply would not be achievable. Why? Because my brain would go in to overload – and I think it’s really important for me to have days completely switched off from the digital world in order to really relax and spend time with Keiran and Shay as a family. That’s why I am all about Switch Off Sundays – a concept more and more bloggers and influencers are taking to that means turning off all electrical equipment, putting down the phones and enjoying a full day of complete social media free blissfulness.
Ahh, the dream!
Now, I am pretty sure this overwhelming effect that social media can have on people is not just for working Mum’s, but for anyone who has a lot on their plate at once or simply those who feel inadequate to those who are supposedly living the most ‘perfect’ life. So if you find yourself scrolling through strangers Instagram feeds and feeling rubbish about your own (and how it doesn’t have flawlessly shot photos that are most likely staged for the shot!), just remind yourself of this: It is so easy to paint a perfect idea on social media, and not all of what you see is exactly what it appears to be.
How about instead of flicking through your phone when you’re bored and trying out a new pass time; one that involves using your brain, embracing your creative side and makes you feel truly good – as opposed to depleted?
After my weekly Switch Off Sunday, I always feel so much more refreshed to take on the week ahead of me – a real bonus of giving yourself a break. You may feel completely disconnected and worry that you’re missing out on some important emails or breaking digital news – but really you’re doing yourself a big favour in the long run when you wake up feeling genuinely determined to smash your goals!
Putting your phone away also means that you’ll most likely have a much sweeter sleep – as the more screen time you get, particularly at night, the more chance your brain is going to continue ticking with all the information it absorbs. I am always surprised at how much better I sleep when I don’t look at my phone – which is definitely something I need when I have a gorgeous 4 month old little man to tend to!
There are so many things you can do instead of scrolling your thumb up and down your social feeds whenever you get a spare moment, so I’m sharing my top 3 favourite ways to get out there and enjoy the real world for a refreshing change…
Shay and I have really taken to going for our long walks in the park… They seem to make him sleepy (yay!) and me feel much more energised (double yay!). I recommend choosing a place that has plenty of greenery and nature to really soak up some fresh air in to your lungs and awaken your senses to how beautiful things are when you choose to notice them. It also means you’re moving – so those endorphins will no doubt kick in and make you feel all kinds of peachy!
Last weekend Shay, Keiran and I had a family trip to Borough market – and it was so fulfilling and lovely to be away from work and spend quality time together enjoying the ever-inspiring food London has to offer. I also love having Sunday’s with my Mum and sister, or getting together with my girlfriends when we get a chance to catch up over a Matcha latte. That, to me, is total happiness – so perhaps making more of an effort to spend time with people you love is a good place to start for your 2018 resolutions?!
That recipe you have been meaning to test out all this time? DO IT! Even better, gather the ingredients from your local Sunday market before putting on your favourite music and enjoying some chill time in the kitchen rustling up your favourite foods. This is such a great form of therapy that leaves you with a fridge full of delicious snacks ready for you to grab through out the week. Trust me – you’ll thank yourself when hanger strikes on that drizzly Tuesday afternoon!
Well, they are my ways to spend Switch Off Sunday – so how about you guys? I would love to hear what you get up to when you’re not busy hustling with work or updating your Insta stories. And if you’re new to the whole switching off idea? Why not try give it a go and see how it makes you feel both mentally and physically. As simple as it sounds – just being present can really help benefit many aspects of your life; from your personal relationships to your overall productivity.
Hope this inspired you for the New Year, loves!
Have a super great week,
