My 5 Top Tips for Boosting Your Immune System

So it’s getting a little colder, the leaves are starting to fall off the trees and there’s a crisp freshness in the air. While all of these things make us feel very seasonal, we often find ourselves feeling a bit sniffly and sick. Follow these 5 tips to help boost your immune system!

1. Steer clear of sugar

Consuming too much sugar weakens the immune system cells we need to defend against bad bacteria. Instead, curb your sweet tooth by embracing berries, apples, citrus fruits and red grapes. In fact, try eating as much fruit and vegetables as you can that contain Vitamin C, E and Zinc. Did you know that eating one cup of raw kale makes up around 100% of your recommended daily Vitamin C intake? Make sure to toss this super food into your next salad.

2. Stress a little less

Easier said than done right? While it’s pretty much impossible to lead a completely stress free life, too much stress is a serious problem. Prolonged stress exposes our bodies to an influx of stress hormones, which overturn our immune systems. While it’s unrealistic to say goodbye to stress completely, it can be managed through daily meditation, deep breathing exercise, regular exercise, and if need be – a change in lifestyle.

3. Start cooking with garlic and ginger

Not only does garlic and ginger add a little zest and flavour to your dish – they also help fight the common flu! Garlic contains a strong concentration of sulfur compounds known to boost the immune system, while ginger is antioxidant rich and known to boost the protective functions of the immune system, necessary to fight cells infected by virus.

4. Sip green tea, and say hello to matcha!

The antioxidants found in green tea are known to protect your immune system against damage from compounds known as free radicals. Another antioxidant rich winter warmer is the Matcha. The extremely concentrated levels of antioxidants in matcha can be seen in the form of polyphenols, catechins, and flavonoids, which strengthens the body’s defence against free radicals. Try replacing your regular morning coffee with a Matcha Latte. Your immune system will thank you for it!
