How to ease a cold the natural way
Getting a cold is a pain in the bum and a lot of people find themselves reaching for the packet of pills to dull the pain. Natures antiseptics can be more healing and better for you, these homeopathic remedies will help cure the cold the natural way.
1. Hydration, hydration, hydration
Staying hydrated is so important, cold or no cold. When you’re ill you lose fluids faster (blowing nose etc. – gross, I know but it’s true). Try and drink plenty of fluids, and sip on a warming brew. Here are some natural remedies to help you get better whilst you drink!
Ginger, honey and lemon
You can use these individually or as a combination; they all have great benefits! Ginger has high anti inflammatory properties and raw honey is great for soothing sore throats.
Liquorice is not only delicious but very soothing! You can either buy the root itself or try Pukka’s three liquorice tea bags.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Can be added to any tea, hot water or alone. It boosts your immune system and alkalises your body, which helps to get rid of nasty bacteria.
You’ve probably heard of this one before. Echinacea is natures pain killer. It is high in anti inflammatory properties and attacks the fungus that builds up when you have a cold. Put a few drops of it into water and drink as much as you can! Or, add it to some boiling water with fresh ginger for an added kick.
Oil of Oregano
This one you probably haven’t heard of and I have to admit I was a bit sceptical at first. It’s the oil from the oregano herb! You just need 1-2 drops in water once a day to gain its antiviral benefits. It is excellent for combatting colds and very good for a sore throat (but this shouldn’t be used if you are pregnant.)
2. Eat your way to wellness
I truly believe in the medicinal powers of food – it really helped me to relieve symptoms of IBS I was suffering when I first began my journey. Since then I make sure to get plenty of goodness from my food depending on what my body needs. When you have a cold there are lots of natures medicines that can be absorbed through eating tasty, nutritious foods!
The antioxidants of vitamin C can be found in oranges, kiwis, papaya, bell peppers and broccoli.
You’ll notice from my recipes that I love using lots of garlic. I pretty much add it to anything I can and even more so when I have a cold. It helps boost your immune system, reduce inflammation and flushes out any toxins.
There is a reason that this is an old favourite, and not just because it’s super comforting and tastes awesome. It also helps reduce inflammation in the lungs which causes coughing.
Run a bath
Take the time out to relax and listen to your body. Hopping in a nice hot bath is great to help pull out any impurities. Have a long soak and add a relaxing essential oil to your bath like lavender. Tea tree and peppermint oil are also my favourites especially when I’m feeling flu-ey.
Take time out
Make sure you’re getting enough sleep especially when you’re sick. I like to watch a film, curled up on the sofa with a blanket. It’s OK to be sick, we live such busy lives and sometimes you just need to stop and relax to make yourself better.
