My podcast guest today is Alice Russell, Alice set up her own management agency, FOUND entertainment with her best friend four years after a career working for a big management agency. She’s a mother of two under two and today we are talking all about what being a working mum means to her and how she makes it work

Why Alice built Found

In her late twenties she began to think about how she could work and be the mum she wanted to be.

Realised her current work life wouldn’t work with being the parent she wanted to be

Feeding

Breastfeeding and work is complicated but there are things you can do

Taking breaks in the work day if necessary or if possible feeding your child at work

Childcare

Work out what is most important to you and choose childcare accordingly

Nanny – children respond well to assurance and confidence so choose someone 

Word of mouth and personal recommendations are great when possible

Most important thing is that your child is happy to go, trust your instinct

Give yourself a break

Learn to prioritise

Learn to work productively and make the most of the time you have

Be prepared that with each stage things change, don’t fight it and be kind to yourself

Dealing with Mum Guilt

If you feel happy and fulfilled as a parent, you will be a better parent 

Don’t feel guilty for having an outlet if it makes you a better person to be around

Identify your non negotiables

If you need to leave by a certain time to be with your children learn to communicate well to your clients or management – If you present solutions as well as the issue they are much more likely to be flexible

How can we switch off to be present for our families 

Awareness is the first step

Don’t look at your phone before you leave in the morning, at bedtime or bath time

Identify the most important times to be present and leave your phone out the room

Allow your children to play without interrupting them or becoming too involved and adapting the narrative, allow them to be imaginative and enjoy it

Parenting Styles and Discipline 

Repetition and consistency are really important 

When time is limited due to work meaning it can be difficult to not just indulge every request 

Kids like boundaries 

Acknowledging your child’s emotions can help them to understand and process them 

Montessori Parenting techniques for transitions, don’t snap your children out of play, give them warning about when you are leaving so that they aren’t taken away and upset. 

Trust is really important – the more they trust that you want what is best for them the more they will listen and act on what you are saying

Self care

Often falls to the bottom of our priority list as mothers

A different definition for different people

Identify what is in your self care tool kit and prioritize those things

Find moments for self care no matter how small 

Saying to your partner in the morning one thing you appreciate about them you might not have time to have long conversations but taking a moment to connect is so important
