Get Your Glow Back – Episode 32 – Simon Stratton

I am joined today by my friend Simon Stratton, Simon is a movement coach and the founder of local motion studio in London, one of my favourite places to exercise. We spoke all about why barefoot is best, how to strip parenting back to basics and let your children inspire you and how we can make the most of our connection to our environment. I hope you loved this episode

Simon’s Movement philosophy – awareness and connection

movement brings about physical and emotional awareness and connection to yourself and your environment.

What makes local motion different to the typical gym

Play is a really important element

You workout barefoot

The focus is on natural movement and creating a community

The aim is to build an adaptable body without injury rather than for aesthetic gain

Starting your own business

Establish a base to use your time effectively

Learn your business plan and work from passion and believe in your own dream

Why Barefoot?

Stripping things back to basics

By wrapping our feet in shoes we limit our experience of the ground beneath us and also change the shape of our feet with detrimental effects on our health

Reduces the amount of shock going through the lower body

Allows us to use our feet dexterously

Helps to reconnect and ground to the environment

Choose shoes with the lowest tread or barefoot shoes

Kick off your shoes whenever you don’t need them

The Benefits of Hanging

We lose grip strength as we get older but once you redevelop grip strength it opens up a lot of exercises like pull ups, dips and hanging.

Hanging is amazing for our posture to decompress our joints realign our spine.

Implementing movement into our children’s lives

Allow your kids to inspire you and join in with play

Inspire them to see and use their environment as a space for movement and keep things adventurous and playful

Simon’s Parenting Philosophy

Treat the children as individuals

Being patient

Controlling your own feelings

Creating a safe space for your children to feel and emote and articulate there world without imposing your own

Taught kids sign language so they could express themselves from a young age before they could speak

Tech neck exercises:

Repetitive strain injury from looking down at phones, laptops and screens.

Solution is to get more movement in your neck

Some exercises you can do are drawing circles with your neck, reversing neck to make a double chin, pushing head back chin up, moving your eyes around.
