Don’t eat meat (unless it’s proper meat!)

A lot of people tell me that they like my book or website because it includes meat. I know that not everyone feels this way but I do believe that meat can be important for many people.

The issue is that a lot of our meat is processed, pumped full of hormones and raised unethically. I totally get why some people are vegan or vegetarian, watching vegan documentaries can force you to kick your meat habits.

However, meat can be very enjoyable and not the terrible cancer causer it is deemed to be. Yes processed burger and sausages can be bad for your health but good quality pasture raised meat is actually good for you.

Why Grass-fed?

Grass fed meat is a great protein source and therefore an extremely important part of your diet. ‘Grass-fed meat’ simply means that the animal has eaten grass its entire life. You are probably thinking that cows always eat grass . . . well, not all of them. In fact, most cows are placed in massive pens stuffed full of grain, as it’s a lot cheaper than rotating them around grass fields.

It’s common sense that what goes into the cow will go into you once you’ve devoured your delicious beef stew. Omega -3 fatty acids originate from the green leaves of plants and algae, so grass-fed animals have more of these essential nutrients due to their diet. In the same way, fish contain copious amounts of omega- 3 fatty acids due to their algae and phytoplankton-rich diets. omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body, improve brain function – and enhance your glow.

Grass-fed goodness

· Grass-fed meat contains 20 times more vitamin E than corn- or soy-fed meat

· It doesn’t contain any nasty trans fatty acids

· It is the richest known natural source of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which makes you slimmer.

· It contains extra amounts of beta- carotene, a powerful antioxidant.

Where can I buy it?

I’m a big fan of Field and Flower, I have known the guys for years now. They are two friends who have set up their own business and deliver meat to your doors. I have set up a box with them which gives you a monthly order of fresh fish, grass fed meat and free range chicken.

You wont believe the taste and the price is very reasonable.

If you prefer to buy your meat as you go then ask your butcher if the meat is grass fed, Dutchy Originals is a good brand at Waitrose which is grass fed too.

You don’t have to eat loads of meat – but if you do make sure its good quality!
