5 Hangover Cures You Might Not Have Tried

It’s here! The festive season is upon us once again – meaning our social calendars will no doubt be filling up faster than you can say ‘Oh, just one more drink won’t hurt…’

As a nutritionist I will say now that our bodies definitely do not go crazy for excessive amounts of alcohol, however enjoying it in moderation and mindfully can boast it’s own soul loving benefits too! And let’s face it: What would Christmas be with out a communal mulled wine as you walk around the markets, or a spiced cocktail with your friends to celebrate the most magical time of year? From work Christmas parties to family gatherings – if you’re a sucker for a little festive tipple, then the chances that you might overdo it once or twice from now to January 1st is pretty high.

And what does that lead to? A big stinking headache the following morning, brought to you by the mother of all hangovers. Not so fun – especially when you have to roll in to work by 9am and pretend you feel human when all you really want to do is bury your head under the covers and devour a greasy bacon sandwich – with extra ketchup. Hands up who has been there before?

Whilst fast processed food and a 16 hour sleep might sometimes seem like the only cure (FYI – it really isn’t!), there are a number of fool-proof ways to cure that hangover in no time using the more natural approach. Here I am sharing 5 ways to beat that dreaded morning after feeling and bounce back to your usual self so you can make the most of your festivities with a clear head…

1. GET AN IV DRIP

Ever heard of an IV drip? Sounds intense – but this technique has successfully treated thousands of hungover heads since launching thanks to it’s ability to instantly pump up the body with a wide array of energy boosting nutrients from vitamin C and magnesium to treat the classic symptoms of nausea, headaches and dizziness. They also help to rehydrate the body – which is super important after a night involving a gin too many!

2. PRACTICE A SEATED TWIST POSE

And when you can’t get access to an IV drip? Try a simple seated twist pose. That’s essentially yoga for ‘detox my body and make me feel alive again!’ Stretching in a seated position and twisting the body around helps to massage the internal organs, strengthen up your stomach area and relieve back pain… Perfect after a rough nights sleep! Because the seated twist pose focuses on the abdominal area, you are also helping to ‘get things moving’ and cleanse the body of toxins. Not bad for something that essentially involves simply sitting on the floor, right?

3. EAT YOUR EGGS!

How do you like your eggs in the morning? Sunny side up, scrambled or poached on toast – this key whole food is my number 1 choice for when it comes to curing a hangover. Not only insanely easy to whip up, eggs are rich in high quality protein to boost energy levels – and they also contain a pretty impressive amount of the amino acid cysteine which helps to rid our poor livers of toxins. Plus they are a total delight to the taste buds… Which is exactly what I know I would want from my morning after breaky! I’ll be having mine with a green juice and an obligatory side of avocado to boost them up even more. Who’s with me?

4. DRINK THE MAGIC TONIC

Okay, so you have woken up and feel like death. Do you go and put the kettle on to make a sugary tea? Do you head to the local pub for a hair of the dog Bloody Mary? Nope! Here is what you are going to do: Go down to your larder and grab that bottle of apple cider vinegar to add to your morning tonic. I know it doesn’t sound all too desirable, but just one tablespoon mixed with lemon juice, a pinch of cayenne pepper, 1 tsp of grated ginger and 200ml of warm water can work absolute wonders on a zombie head! How? It helps to dissolve anything ‘foreign’ in the body, fire up the digestion and regulate blood sugar levels. If you want you can add a teaspoon of raw honey to balance out the taste!

5. SWEAT IT OUT

When I say ‘sweat it out’ – you probably think I mean an intense HIIT work out that involves a whole sequence of unthinkable moves to get the body back in to balance. But you’ll be pleased to know that that is absolutely not where I am going here! In fact, I know of many people who swear by a sweaty sauna session to fight a hangover, as sweating helps to relieve the body of toxins. If you’re in to the sauna scene, you’ll also know that they also really help with centre the mind, get you breathing and relax you – which is definitely a good thing when all you want to do is hide away from the world until you feel remotely human again!
